Evaluation Q1
1. This shot is an example of where we
have tried to create a connection with the lyrics of the song and the visual
action that is happening in our video. The lyrics of the song ‘You’ve got to
make the move’ gave us the idea that the character in the music video must be about
to make his move in the activity that he or she is doing. So for example in
this shot we can see the character breaking through the gate of the house as
the lyrics are sung. This creates the impression that the character is making
his move by breaking through the gate of the house and running towards the front
door of the house.
2. The shot of the artist of the song
shows best how we wanted her to look like in our video. She is dressed in black
leather with black make up to portray a sense of danger and authority. This was
done to try and create a suitable connection with the artist and the storyline
that is being played throughout the music video. The record company would want
this to be the case as the music video Is also advertising the game ‘Surker’,
and the connection in appearance of the artist and the story of the game will
create a better bond between the game and the theme song of the game, sung by
the artist.
3. The super slow motion shot of the
foot stepping in the puddle is a good connection with the genre of dubstep in
the music industry. This is because the image of the water moving in such slow
motion intrigues the viewer much in the same way that the noise of some dubstep
songs will intrigue the listener. The movement of the water is sum lot strange
much like the sounds that are related to dubstep music. The distorted image of
the water is a reflection of the abstract nature of the music.
4. The shot of the gaurd shooting his
gun is a good example of intertextual reference. This is because the image of a
man in a balaclava is a common image seen in many games and movies. He would
most commonly be related to as the ‘bad guy’ and in some ways in our video we
have also created this stereotypical view of the character. A specific example
of this may be seen in the film ‘Green Zone’ with the terrorist characters.
5. This shot demonstrates a close up
shot of the artists face from a side angle. You can also see that we have
focused this shot so that the background around the artists head is blurred
slightly to make sure that all focus is pronominally on the artist rather than
her surroundings.
6. For this shot of the character once
he has entered the house, we had to use a portable light to light up the porch
of the house. This was due to the fact that the porch had no original lighting
so the use of the lamp helped us bring the light level of the porch back up to
the same light level as the rest of the house.
7. The shot of the character running out
of the drive way and into the woods is a good example of where we have used
mise-en-scene. Our character is dressed in a hoody with the hood up and is
carrying a gun in one hand and the stolen suitcase in the other. The use of the
props and the way the character is dress all contribute as forms of
mise-en-scene towards the image we are trying to create of the character as a
thief.
8. This close up shot is of the artist
singing the lyrics of the song. This is the most common image seen in a music
video and therefore a good example of where I have seen other music videos and
then used this knowledge to create the same effects in our video.
9. The medium shot of the character
walking in slow motion taken from behind is a shot which I believe to be quite
common in other music videos for example in the music video for promises by
Nero there is shots of taken from behind people as they are walking. This is
also the case in Modesteps music video for show me a sign, where the female
characters are shown walking in slow motion from behind.
1.
The clip from Zeds dead- You and I, is a good
example of where the lyrics have been matched with the image shown in the music
video. The lyrics ‘light me up a cigarette’ clearly matches with the image
shown of the character smoking a cigarette in the music video.
2.
This shot from Birdmans- Money to blow, shows
the artist standing around two new and expensive looking cars. He is also shown
throwing money on the floor. This relates well to the lyrics of the song ‘ive
got money to blow’ as he is throwing money on the floor like it is worth
nothing to him. The image is also shot in this way so that the record company
can show off the wealth of their artists and the stereotypical image of a rap
or hip-hop artist.
3.
This shot is taken from Modesteps- show me a
sign. It clearly illustrates a man sitting at a DJ deck broadcasting music.
This relates well with the music genre of dubstep as DJ decks are one of the
main pieces of equipment used to create dubstep music.
4.
This clip is taken from the Beastie boys- Sabotage.
It is a great example of intertextual reference as we can clearly see how it
has taken a tole of a 80s undercover police car. It is almost completely
renacting the scene from the movie scarsy and hutch. With this similarity
between scenes from movies and the scene in the music video it is a good
indication of intertextual reference.
5.
This close up shot of a samurai sword is a good
example of the use of camera in the music video for Modesteps- show me a sign.
We can see how the camera has been focused so that only the sword is in focus
and the face of the woman in the background is slightly blurred. This is done to
draw the audience’s attention to the weapon more than what is happening in the
rest of the image.
6.
The long shot of the women walking through the
tunnel in Modesteps- show me a sign is a great example of where lighting has
been used. We can see in the image that there are positioned lights along the
floor of the tunnel lighting up the walls. This is done to make the characters
seem even more dark and camouflaged as they are walking through the area of the
tunnel that has no lighting.
7.
This long shot of the woman walking down the
alley is taken from Modesteps- show me a sign. The use of Mise-en-scene in this
shot is portrayed in the way that the character is dressed. The woman is
dressed smart in a coat and boots. This
does not relate to what you would expect a character to dress in a dubstep
music video. However there is the use of props in the form of the headphones
she is warring. These headphones create a connection with the music in the
video as they are DJ headphones much like the ones the DJs of Modestep would
actually ware when playing there music. When we move on into the music video we
see that when she takes off the jacket she is warring an assassins outfit. This
now relates well with the genre of dubstep with its violent and aggressive
sound much like the image of an assassin gives off. The alley way that the shot
is filmed also gives of connotations of mystery. They alley way is looked at as
a grim or unpleasant location where a scene of a movie is shot.
8.
And 9.
Both demonstrate a common appearance in a dubstep/ dance music video. In most
music videos for dubstep or dance there is almost always some form of abstract
imagery in the video. The examples hear are images of waves in Subfocus- tilde
wave and a disfigured face of a man in Calvin Harris- She wolf. The abstract
movement of the images in the music video is always in sync with the music some
lot like an visualizer.
