Concepts of the Digipacs
and Game Advertisement!!
When
planning out our course work for this year we can up with our idea of not only
creating a music video for a song but also to create an advertisement for a
game, as stated further below in my blog. We then needed to think about how we
could create good texts in our digipacs that would form part of a bigger
promotional package. So from there we created album covers that promoted the
song and artist with references to the game such as the image being taken from
the footage of the game in our music video. I then created an advertisement poster
for just the game so to make sure that there were some aspects of our digipacs
that were directed to the game audience rather than the music audience.
The reasoning
to our decision to create a music video that is also being used as a game advertisement
was so we could create a wider span of media and revenue streams in our project.
Not only have we created a simple music video for a song but have also
generated a music video that advertises the song and at the same time
advertises a game. This then attracts a wider audience of gamers and music
lovers that benefits the game production company as the audience viewing the
game advert is increased and the music production company are benefited in the
same way as the additional gamer’s audience is listening to their song to a
game footage, and therefore increasing the target market. This could then open
doors for other revenue streams. Toys from the game could have references to
the song, there might be a game album released which will contain the song from
the video, clothing from the game may have text from the song imprinted on it. There
are so many different ways that the song could be advertised as a result of it
being the theme song for a game merely as by doing this the target audience for
the song is increased dramatically and as a result more people will want to buy
it. Therefore making it an successful way of advertisement.

Below are some screen shots of the software’s we used to
create the special effects and editing for our video. You can see that we used
Sony Vegas pro 11 for the putting together and editing of the video. And you
can also see that we used After Effects to create the special effects of the
gun shot and the use of the plugin Twixtor to create the supper slow motion in
the puddle shot.

As well as
creating an advertisement for the song album I have made an advertisement poster
for the game itself. I think this is a good idea as it portrays the wide use of
different media that we are trying to use in our project.
When creating the poster there were a number of different factors
I had to take into account to make it a good form of advertisement. I have used
actual images out of the music video then used Photoshop to edit them so that
they look more game graphic like. I was inspired to do this after looking at
the GTA 3 game poster which has a similar look to the game advertisement I have
created. Of course the game graphic effect is mainly there to create the connection
with the Song and the game. I have also included ratings to help make the poster
look more authentic. I have used two three well known magazines/ papers and
have generated quotations from each ones and star ratings as is seen in many advertisements.
I have made one of the quotations and ratings larger and more central to the
rest as it was from The Times newspaper which is a well-respected and popular
paper. This means that if people were to see the game with such high ratings
form The Times then they will believe that the game and song are good. So this is my first draft and the GTA poster which i got some of my insparation from.

Going back to the points I was making about the ideas for
the album covers I have come up with some of my own drafts. These are not final
as I alone have done them and the other members of the group have done their
own drafts as well. This is so that we can come together at the end to make an
agreement of which idea we should follow that would suit the song and game the
best. This album cover below is what I have come up with as the album cover
that relates to the game rather than the band. I have used shots from the music
video itself and photoshoped them to give them a more graphical look that I think
suits the idea of a game. As you can see from the album cover we have decided
to call the game Surker.

Album Covers
When looking into ideas for our album cover and advert we needed to think about how we would make it look so there was some form of connection between the artist album and the game track album. After much thought I decided that it would be easier to make two different album covers, one for the game and one for the band, and a single advert that will be based on the game. My group has come up with a number of different ideas for our album covers. We asked a number of people in our boarding house what they would expect to see on a dubstep album cover and the image that was most mentioned was the simple idea of a close up shot of a sub woofer with the name of the artist and album on it. So we have decided to use a subwoofer in some way in our video. For example replacing the head of a person in a shot. For the game track album we would want to use the character for the game and play around with Photoshop to get an image that would suit the game genre. An idea which I came up with was to have two shots of the character standing in a particular position but warring completely different clothing. Then merge the images together so the final outcome looks as if the character is warring one outfit on one half of his body and another outfit on the other side of his body. This creates a sense of range in the personalities within the character. An example of a simple album cover which we found online shows the use of just a simple sub woofer and the text.

When creating
the muzzle flashes, blood sprays and ground hits of the bullet, the use of
special effects is fairly simple. However there is one shot which we are going
to try and attempt which is much more complicated. We want to get a shot of a
slow motion bullet moving through the air. We know this is a little ambitious
however by having to power to do this with our software ‘After Effects’ we are determined
to give it a try. An example of what we are wanting to achieve is below.

When doing our questionnairs we thought that we should try and gather our data using more aspects of media than simply words on a bit of paper. So we asked people who we interviewed if they wouldent mind doing the questionnair in an interview form on cammera. To be frank the response was not as good as we had hopped as we found that most people did not like the idea of being filmed. However there were some who agreed to be filmed and hear we have an example of one of our interviews!!

When doing out audience research we made a small questionnaire and handed it out around our boarding houses at school to gather enough infomation to get some good ideas for our video and to see what the audience wants. Bellow is the questionnaire we used!
Audience research questionnaire!
What feeling
to you get when listening to dubstep music?
What would u
expect to see in a dubstep music video?
Do you think
that there are some aspects of dubstep that create a sense of calm?
Would you
expect to see the artist of the song in the video?
Have you
ever seen a music video that is also advertising a game?

This video
fits the aspects of dubstep very well. There is explosions, kids dressed up
like tiny gangsters and lots of fast moving shots and fast editing. The video
shows kids with bandannas around their faces as the truck nears. This was to
gather tension as the lead up to the drop in the song gets closer. The lyrics
to the song, “Shouts to all my Lost Boys, we rowdy “ plays on loop in the
background and is effective to the message the video is trying to portray. A little
catch I found with the video is the connection with peter pan. The term Lost
Boys were the little misfit kids who never grow up, and at the end of the video
we see the ice-cream man with a hook instead of a hand after it had been
chopped of in the first heist by one of the boys. The boys use explosives to
stop the ice cream van. This is a reflection on the fast violent sound related
to dubstep.
After they
eat the ice cream, one of the boys shadows gets larger this is to portray them
growing up. This creates a sense of tension as the music video has now taken a
huge turn of events. We then find the grown up boys now robbing a armed van
with rocket launchers and guns. This ups the intensity of the video as well as
the intensity of the song. There are more explosions and more action which
creates a sense of excitement towards the viewer. The editing of the video is
in sync with the music very nicely. When the boy fires a small explosive at the
ice cream van driver and it explodes, the drop to the song happens at the same
time. This is then replicated with the rocket launcher and the armed van when
the boys are grown up. Some of the shots of the heist are slowed down to create
more tension such as in a way which I will be using in my video.
The hole concept
of a ice cream van being robbed by kids is very out of the blue. Its something new
that u would expect to see. This is one of the reasons why this video is especially
good. After looking at this video in detail I have gathered ideas as to how I will
approach my video when the time comes to make it. I will be looking at quick
editing and slow motion, as well as the synchronization of the music with the
action shots.

Hear are some more dubstep/drum and bass music videos i have found that portrey loss of control, violence and insanity which is typicaly related to the sound of dubstep. In the second video by skrillex the use of action and gunfire is used to emphasise the music. I will be looking to be useing the same statagy of action in my video to create the same effect.

Introduction
For my A2
music video I have decided to go for a type of music called dub step. This form
of music has only recently in the past two years become more and more popular
and is now even considered mainstream. The song I have decided to use is nick
named chill step as it is slightly calmer than most dub step songs. I have been
thinking about the way I would film my project, for example to have a calm
video to go with the song or to have a violent and dramatic video that is
perhaps played in slow motion to create a sense of calm that would make the
video relevant to the hole concept of fast dub step and also make it relevant to
the calmness of the specific song that the video is for.
When I was
looking at music videos of other dub step videos, one in particular caught my
eye. The song is by skrillex and uses scenes from the new transformers film as
its music video. This whole idea of advertisement within a music video which is
common in most film theme songs music videos caught my attention and i have now
looked deeper into the advertisement of games within music videos as well such
as the new trailer for the new game Sleeping dogs, where real actors are used to play a scene in the game. With this in mind I have
thought up of a way of creating a music video which will also be an advertisement
for a fantasy game which the music video will be showing an acted out piece of
game play. I have already created one of these music videos in my free time
with gameplay from Call Of Duty and a second music video using scenes from
Death Race to experiment with some ideas. All the videos that I have talked about will
be attached to this blog to clarify my thoughts and as the year goes on I will
be going into far more depth on all the points I have made and more that will
come up as the course work progresses. The video at the top is one i created, the bottom on is from Sleeping dogs and the one in the middle is an example of a dubstep music video.
